Mula kay Bernard Ong:
There are 3 ongoing investigations by NBI, BFP and DOLE into the Davao mall fire that killed 38 workers.
Already one potentially liable official – the City Mayor – has joined forces with mall owner to argue that the building met fire safety requirements.
Her logic: We issued permits. They must be compliant.
The logical flaw: Mall may not have been compliant. BFP (Fire Bureau) and Mayor’s Office may have erred in issuing permits in the first place.
We can have this she-said he-said debate til kingdom come. It won’t change a simple fact: 37 BPO workers were trapped without an exit.
So something was very wrong and needs to be investigated – thoroughly and impartially.
There should just be one high-level independent probe panel – covering all aspects (arson, fire compliance, labor, accountability of licensing officials).
Local BFP, local DOLE, and Mayor’s office should be kept out. They will be tempted to exonerate themselves of past deeds that indirectly led to the deaths.
Unlike other deaths in Davao, this should not go the way of Gordon’s half-hearted Komite de Absuelto investigations.
Let the truth come out. And the chips fall where they may.
Ang tanong: Makakalusot kaya ang Duterte family sa investigation na ito?
